Secondary audience research

"A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium."

The history of music videos

Music videos were sparsely used prior to the 1980s, and were known uner various terms such as "promo videos" and "musical film". However, in the 1980s, music videos went mainstream with the beginning of MTV - 24 hour music on demand, celebrating the form of music videos. Michael Jackson's Thriller revolutionised modern music videos, in 1983, becoming the most succcessful and iconic music video of all time, as well as setting new standards in terms of costs and production of music videos. The MTV awards were launched, in the following year; the first of their kind, celebrating the importance of music videos. VH1 launched a few years later, catering to an older audience, and broadening the demographic at which music videos were aimed. During the next 20 years, many music videos would pioneer new techniques of music video production, invloving darker themes, animation, controversial subject matters, celebrity stars and juxtaposition of song and video.

In 2005, the introduction of YouTube and social networking meant that not only was it easier for consumers to access music videos but also made it easier for unknown stars to make their own videos known, with social networking playing a pivotal role in the careers of pop stars such as Lily Allen and Justin Bieber, and YouTube helping to attract worldwide attention towards acts like Ok Go!, as a result of innovative music videos.
